Janeway Foundation Holds 2016-17 Annual General Meeting

St. John’s, NL – Today the Janeway Children’s Hospital Foundation held its annual general meeting at Eastern Health Community Services Building, Cordage Place. Lloyd Powell, Chair, Janeway Foundation’s Board of Directors, and Lynn Sparkes, President and CEO, Janeway Foundation, shared activities and accomplishments of the fiscal year ended March 31, 2017.

“This past fiscal year, through the generosity of our donors, the Janeway Foundation disbursed $3,396,463 to the Janeway Hospital and other pediatric initiatives across the province; it is the largest amount we have ever given to the hospital in a single year,” stated Lloyd Powell. “Eighty per cent went towards new capital equipment and the remainder was allocated for research, continued education, and programs, all to provide the best care possible for children and their families in Newfoundland and Labrador.”

One such investment was an upgrade to the Motion Analysis Centre which helps our patients who have mobility difficulties and who have undergone orthopedic surgery. Also new to the Janeway is the Transcranial Doppler Ultrasound Probe, used to screen patients with Sickle Cell Disease (SCD). Each year the population of Newfoundland and Labrador is becoming more culturally diverse. Due to this rise in diversity, the medical team at the Janeway treats different pediatric conditions such as SCD. Having this tool here alleviates the family having to travel to Ontario for screening. Another $150,000 was allocated for pediatric research and the funding assisted in the local study of hospitalizations due to self-harm by drug ingestion.

At the meeting, the Janeway Foundation also announced that Lloyd Powell was stepping down as Chair. “As Board Chair I am proud to have played a role in the improvement of our financial management and governance practices, but most of all, I feel a great sense of satisfaction to be part of a team that increased revenues in excess of 60% over the past 5 years.” Martin Sullivan, CEO, Ocean Choice International, was appointed the new Board Chair. Mr. Sullivan joined the Janeway Foundation Board in 2012 and served as Vice-Chair last year. The Foundation also announced the retiring of three board members: Adam Stanley, Jeremy Charles, and Shane Kennedy.
