August 10, 2026, St. John’s, NL – Today Canada Cycles for Kids gave $75,000 to the Janeway Foundation to purchase two new CritiCool Systems for the Janeway Children’s Health and Rehabilitation Centre’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). These systems provide precise, automated temperature control, dramatically improving survival rates and long-term outcomes for newborns who suffer oxygen deprivation at birth. In attendance for the special cheque presentation were, Rob Fetherstonhaugh, Co-Founder of Canada Cycles for Kids, Barry Fowler, volunteer, Carla Dyke, Division Manager, NICU & Respiratory Therapy at the Janeway, Karlee MacDonald Janeway Champion, and her mother Jennifer, Rebecca Dutton, President and CEO of the Janeway Foundation, and Gill Whelan, Board Chair of the Janeway Foundation.

“Every minute counts when a newborn suffers oxygen deprivation at birth. Without immediate treatment, this can lead to lifelong disabilities or worse. The most effective, evidence-based treatment is therapeutic hypothermia, cooling the baby’s body to protect the brain and prevent further injury. This is where these systems come in.

More than one in ten babies born in Newfoundland and Labrador will spend time in our NICU. Investing in state-of-the-art equipment ensures that every child receives the safest, most advanced care possible, giving them the best chance for a healthy future. These technologies are not just nice-to-have, they are lifesaving tools that help our incredible team provide world-class care right here at home. Thank you to Canada Cycles for Kids for making this possible.”

Rebecca Dutton, President and CEO, Janeway Foundation

“My Co-Founder, Marc Balevi and I had a dream to cycle across Canada. So we decided to cycle for children’s charities across Canada. We have raised over $ 4,500,000 over the past twenty-five years and each dollar raised has gone to the children’s charities we have supported.

This year we cycled Vancouver Island and purchased urgently needed medical equipment for Vancouver Island Hospitals.  We have also purchased medical equipment for Rankin Inlet in Nunavut. So from Sea to Sea and finally Sea, we are here today in St. John’s, NL.

The Janeway Foundation team, led by Rebecca Dutton as President and CEO and Gill Whelan as Board Chair, are just outstanding in their care for the community.  We hope that the CritiCool systems that we will purchase, with their guidance, will help families across Newfoundland and Labrador for many years to come.”

Rob Fetherstonhaugh, Co-Founder, Canada Cycles for Kids

“We are incredibly grateful to Canada Cycles for Kids for their outstanding $75,000 contribution to the Janeway Foundation. Every rider, donor, sponsor and volunteer played a part in making this gift possible, and the impact will be felt by children and families throughout our province for years to come.

As someone who wholeheartedly believes in the power of community and the importance of moving our bodies to support both physical and mental well-being, it’s especially meaningful to see people come together through cycling to create such a positive impact. Canada Cycles for Kids demonstrates what can happen when people unite around a shared purpose. On behalf of the Janeway Foundation, thank you for showing the community that children’s health is a priority.”
