Janeway Foundation gives $150,000 in funding to Janeway Pediatric Research Unit

St. John’s, NL – The Janeway Children’s Hospital Foundation is pleased to invest $150,000 to pediatric research in Newfoundland and Labrador (NL).

“The Janeway Children’s Health and Rehabilitation Centre, in affiliation with Memorial University of Newfoundland, serves as a primary clinical resource for vital pediatric medical research,” said Lynn Sparkes, President and CEO, Janeway Foundation. “Each year, on behalf of our donors, the Foundation is committed to providing funding to the Janeway Pediatric Research Unit. Without funding for ongoing research, advancements in the diagnosis and treatment of illness and injury would not be achievable.”

Dr. Roger Chafe, Director, Janeway Pediatric Research Unit states, “Without the support of the Janeway Foundation, and the donors, much of the research we do, particularly the projects focused on the NL population, very likely would not happen.”

Established in 2011, the Janeway Pediatric Research Unit serves as the link for pediatric research overseen at the Janeway and Memorial University of Newfoundland’s Faculty of Medicine. Faculty and staff associated with the unit lead clinical and applied health research, with over 60 active projects on a range of childhood diseases.

A few of the studies taking place are in the areas of:

– Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia
– Hydration for Infants Admitted with Bronchiolitis
– Type 1 Diabetes
– Autism Spectrum Disorders

Serving the needs of NL children, the research unit has, and will continue to, enhance and expand clinical research through current and future clinical trials, clinical studies and health service initiatives.
