St. John’s, NL – The Janeway Children’s Hospital Foundation congratulates Chef Jeremy Charles, Sarah Parker Charles, and their team of colleagues, chefs and supporters for being honoured with a Spirit of Philanthropy Award (Group) from the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) Newfoundland and Labrador Chapter (AFP-NL). A special event was held today at Manuals River Hibernia Interpretation Center to celebrate the Charles family and all Spirit of Philanthropy Award recipients.
Jeremy, Sarah and their colleagues have hosted the Dinner for Levi for many years in support of the Janeway Foundation. This is an annual third-party fundraising dinner and auction in memory of Jeremy and Sarah’s son Levi, who was cared for at the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at the Janeway. Having been so impacted by the care and support of the NICU staff, they were compelled to show their gratitude and wanted to take action.
“The Charles’ commitment to the Janeway and their community is incredible. They embody the true spirit of philanthropy,” says Carmella Butland with the Janeway Foundation who nominated Jeremy and Sarah for the award.
In a world where medical technologies and treatment protocols are ever-changing, the support from Dinner for Levi has allowed the Janeway to stay current and has helped to introduce new state-of-the-art methods to enhance and keep pace with on-going advancements in pediatric care.
The Dinner for Levi has raised over $540,000 over the past 10 years. The Charles family make multi-year commitments to fund areas of care at the Janeway and have attained each goal they set.
The Dinner for Levi has helped fund the creation of a Special Care Unit for children under the age of two, and last year, the Charles family made a multi-year commitment to direct their fundraising efforts to create a palliative care suite at the Janeway, a private space with the goal of improving quality of life – for the child and the family that will be moving forward without them.
“National Philanthropy Day is an opportunity for us to celebrate those who give each year, whether it be in volunteer time or charitable donations, and our members who are responsible for generating philanthropic support for their organizations. Philanthropy is a powerful thing. No one is required to give; it is voluntary and those who give do so because they see the need,” states Kelly Reid, President, AFP NL Chapter.
About the Janeway Children’s Hospital Foundation The Janeway Children’s Hospital Foundation is a registered charitable organization created to raise funds to meet the financial needs of the Janeway Children’s Health and Rehabilitation Centre for capital projects, medical equipment and research and programs directly related to the health and welfare of NL children, while promoting awareness of these needs.
