St. John’s, NL – The Janeway Children’s Hospital Foundation will hold its 2021 Janeway Children’s Miracle Network (CMN) Telethon on June 5 and 6. It is a long-standing tradition among CMN hospitals across Canada to hold the Telethon on the first weekend in June. An exception was made to the Telethon dates in 2020 when the COVID-19 pandemic halted the Foundation’s plans. For this year, the planning to return to June began in late 2020, and has continued with little disruption. The health and safety of all those involved in the two-day fundraising event is the Foundation’s top priority, and similar to last year, all public health protocols will be followed – the majority of cheque presentations and all entertainment segments will be pre-recorded; fewer volunteers and staff will be on site to ensure social distancing; and proper sanitizing practices will be adhered to. It will broadcast from one location – NTV Studios in St. John’s.

The Telethon’s 2021 goal is to raise $2.5 million to advance newborn care and to upgrade specialized surgical equipment. Pieces of equipment to purchase will include:
• Air Transport System for the NICU’s transport team
• New Incubators
• Upgraded Birthing Bed System
• Neurological surgical equipment

“Meeting this year’s need is no doubt challenging, but not unsurmountable,” said Lynn Sparkes, President and CEO, Janeway Foundation. “We learned a great deal from last year’s Telethon; amidst being faced with a global pandemic, we executed a safe and successful event. Thanks to our Janeway donors, we raised almost $3 million to purchase a new CT Scan for the Janeway Hospital.”

“The Board of Directors supports a move back to June,” stated Martin Sullivan, Chair, Board of Directors. “The Telethon is an enormous endeavour and raises significant monies for the Janeway. Achieving last year’s goal was nothing short of extraordinary thanks to the generosity of our donors and supporters. We hope our Newfoundland and Labrador residents will once again rally their support for the Janeway.”
