St. John’s, NL – The Janeway Children’s Hospital Foundation is excited to announce its Janeway and Children’s Miracle Network (CMN) Champion for 2023, Abigale Latoszek. A special event was held at her school, St. Mary’s Elementary, to make the announcement in front of her family, friends, teachers and staff. The event also recognized last year’s Champion, Xavier Rodrigues, to thank him for doing an outstanding job representing the Janeway and CMN throughout the past year.
Each year, the Janeway Foundation identifies a remarkable child to serve as their Champion. Their story demonstrates the incredible advances that have been made in children’s health care in Newfoundland and Labrador, and the personal journey children and their families take to overcome illness or injury.
Abigale, or Abi, is a bright, funny, sweet and energetic 8 and a half year old. Her favourite pastimes are singing and dancing, riding and caring for horses, and spending time with her cousins and her cats.
Staci, Abi’s mom, says, “She proved time after time how strong she is. How much fight she has in her. She never once gave up, and she made it to the finish line. The nightmare is over, but the journey continues.”
Abi’s Janeway journey began when she was 5 years old. She was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia (ALL). To date, she visited the Janeway more than 210 times receiving excellent care in countless departments. She formed special friendships with the nurses, her social worker, and many other staff members who provided the best care and comfort when Abi and her family needed the support.
Abigale is looking forward to a big year ahead sharing her story at various events. A highlight will be a trip to Florida for the CMN Children’s Hospital Week where she will get an opportunity to meet other Champions and their families.
The Champion Program is sponsored by Walmart Canada, a long-time supporter of the Janeway and CMN. Ben Girvan, Director, Market Leader, and many Walmart Managers were pleased to join the event to hear first-hand how their partnership impacts the Janeway.
