Name: Jacob
Current Age: 14
Hospital: Janeway Children’s Health and Rehabilitation Centre

Meet Jacob: Jacob was born on New Year’s Day – seemingly healthy – until two weeks later when he started to present unusual symptoms. His entire body was covered in extreme rashes, he had strange swellings, bumps, and bone lesions which made it too painful for him to be touched. He was placed under the care of Dr. Dancey who worked tirelessly to research Jacob’s condition. It was when Jacob’s condition worsened that Dr. Dancey decided to begin a daily injection of Anakinra, a drug often used to treat rheumatoid arthritis. Within 24 hours, there was a noticeable improvement and for the first time in 10 months, Jacob’s mom held her son in her arms. The medical term for Jacob’s condition is DIRA (Deficiency of Interleukin 1 Receptor Antagonist). Dr. Dancey, along with Dr. Goldbach-Mansky in Maryland, continues to monitor Jacob and since diagnosing him, 13 patients worldwide have been identified with this illness. This discovery has opened a new realm into inflammatory conditions.
